AS2 Task 4: Be able to produce a television ident to a brief

Be able to produce a television ident to a brief

The following post, I will be writting on what my ident is in detail and how ti was made.

I have created my ident using plaster scene in the form of small circles. Using a camera to take pictures, I am creating a stop motion ident.

The Ident starts with different coloured circles, in a formation of a a big circle, The entire group of circles would rotate clock wise.

Then they would scramble together . To show excitement they will be bouncing aroun. Following that, all of them would join together and be nudging each other to continue the excitement.

In an instant, they would pop into a C. Afterwards, the C moves along like a line of ants, to form a B.

The B will rotate 360º in a fast motion multiple times.  Following thet,  the B would go back into a C in the same fashion but in reverse.  Once the C is complete, each individual circle would scatter off of the screen. Instantly, the CBBC letters pop on to the frame. thet will be bouncing up and down to show excitement  for the upcoming programme.

AS2 Task 3: Pre-Production

Pre-Production

Due to the fact that I will be Producing the circle ident idea, I will need to prepare the folioing things:

Camera with a tripod
Multi-coloured plasticine to be in small coloured circles, The amount of circles i will need is 18. With a few extra, just incase we need them. Furthermore, I will need to have a background that is vibrant in colour to show the circles effectively.

The location that this ident will be  produced at Robert Clack School in their Media department, I have their permission.

I will be producing this ident on Monday the 17th of October. The duration of the production will be one day.

Costs:

Plasticine - £1.99
Camera rent (one day) - £15.00
Tripod rent - £5.00
Large background paper - 30p

I will have the help of one production assistant to make sure the plasticine is handled correctly whilst I take the photographs. The cost of hiring this production assistant will be £11 per hour

Risk Assesment

There are minimal risks to this production. However, there are a few and they are as follows:

Tripping over the tripod, in turn the camera falling and smashing. This can be avoided by identifying the legs of the tripod, when placed

If allergic to plasticine, wear gloves to avoid allergies

AS2 Task 2: Designing the Suite

Designing the Suite

As I mentioned in my last post the theme of my suite of idents is shapes.  One ident includes circles, the other has rectangles and the final one has triangles.

These are  suitable for the channel because the target audience are children, which means that the suite would need to be colourful, playful and fun, these idents are exactly that. The idents should be broadcasted at around 4 o'clock in the evening, this is because children would have returned from school by then and would probably be watching CBBC. All of the idents are suitable to be broadcasted all year round and can be adapted to fit the holidays like easter and christmas.

Circle Ident:

The Ident starts with different coloured circles, in a formation of a a big circle, The entire group of circles would rotate clock wise. Then they would scramble together to make and be bouncing to show excitement. Following that, all of themwould join together and be nudging each other to continue the excitement.

Rectangle Ident:

This ident would start off similarly to the previous idea, but with rectangles. They will be multi coloured and be spinning around the frame. The rectangles will then morph intp of CBBC's logos. They would also be jumping with excitement whilst the rectangles are moving about, They would then pop into each individual letter in the logo, in different colours.

The logo that i am trying to replicate in this ident is the following image:

Triangle ident:

This ident would start with  multiple Triangles grouped together in a circle, that are of different. colours. They would move around the frame and they all would  stand still for a few seconds. They would seem as if they are flipping to give more efect. Soon they woudl start attaching to for the letter C., They would seem that thet they are clipping together using their corners.

AS2 Task 1: Ideas Generation

Ideas Generation

I have thought of three ident ideas for the chancel CBBC. They all connect through the theme of shapes.

The ident ideas are connected by the theme of  shapes. One Idea uses circles, the other idea uses rectangles and the final idea uses triangles.

I will be producing the ident idea that uses triangles. It  would be suitable for children, it would be broadcasted when the children return from school so they would see it. Also the ident would be adapted to different times of the year, like christmas. For example it may add snow flakes, elves or candy canes to adapt to the season. It can also be adapted to Easter by including easter eggs.

AS1 Task 3: Understanding the Design of a Suite of Television Idents

Understanding the Design of a Suite of Television Idents

This is when a television channel is designing a new television ident, they do not only create one, they create multiple also known as a suite.
When they create a suite they essentially create multiple, all the idents in the suite would be linked together by the same theme.
A suite of idents allows for a  variation and interest for the audience, the audience would not necessarily get this with one.
Brand identity is created and mentioned by having a whole suite of idents connected with one theme.

Time and Place:

Having a suite of television idents helps to make sure the correct ident is played in front of the content related to it. An ident would have a certain tone that would be needed at a certain time day, for example when children come back from school, the ident would have a tone suited to their tone.

The first ident of the suite mainly showcases bikes so, this ident would be broadcasted  just before a programme the relates to bikes or a motor vehicle of some sort. It would be shown in the afternoon as their audience would return home. The audience that this relates to would be motor vehicle enthusiasts

Hippos are the main focus of this ident, due to them swimming in a circle formation which is an iconic style of the BBC. It would appeal to people who areinterested in sea life animals. The ident would mainly be shown before a programme relating to sea life animals, this can be on the early afternoon of a weekend to make sure their audience are watching

This ident is very general so, it can be broadcasted before most programmes. Due to what it shows, it would be broadcasted mainly during evening and nigh time.

Finally, this ident is mainly aimed at students so, it would be broadcasted at aroun 4 o'clock  in the afternoon. This is ideal because most student would be back home at around that time.

The suite above has been created by the BBC. The theme of the suite is a circle all of the idents retain a circle of some sort.
The theme appeals to practically everyone who watches the BBC, this is because the BBC is using their iconic circling technique that their audience is used to.

They have used the same circle theme in different ways in their idents. In their idents they use  objects in the ident to create an on going circle. One example is the hippos swimming in a circle formation.

All the idents are entertainment based. They are there to amuse the audience right before a show or programme.  This is because the indents use animations that only amuse and have very little to no informational content within them.

Some idents are intend to be used in certain times of the year. For example a christmas themed ident would be broadcasted during the holiday season in December.

The circle themed suite convays that The BBC is simple and straight forward. Also i believe that the circle means they have content being broadcasted all year round.

The design of the suite retains continuity and all the idents have consistency within them. So it keeps their audience loyal to their brand and content that they produce. Each ident is 32 seconds long, this keeps their idents short and straight to the point

AS1 Task 2: Understanding Limitations of a Television Idents

Understanding Limitations of a Television Idents

Typography:

Typography is a style of writing that is used for idents. The typography has to be the same for all idents within the same organisation. However, this is a positive because it gives the organisation continuity. This allows the viewer to easily identify the ident is made by the same organisation.  Also it is easily transferable so, other idents made by the same organisation will have the same typography. This allows the organisation  to save time and effort as their idents will have the same typography.

The images above are idents made by the BBC. They all have the same 'BBC' Typography

Colour:

Colour is used on all idents to make them easily recognisable to the organisation that created it. However, colour can be a restriction because different organisations would have a specific tone of colour which would be copyrighted. On the other hand, it is not bad as what is seems because it would create consistency within the brand.

The image above shows how the BBC uses colour in their different channels, i.e red for new, yellow for sports etc. This helps the audience in identifying the channel they want to watch.

Aspect Ratio:

Aspect ratio is a way of identifying the dimension of the screen. For example  16:9 is the ratio dimension of  watching on a wide screen television (which is currently the standard). It helps the studio  to know what aspect ratio to produce their content so, their content will fit on most if not all people's television screens. It can be a limitation if  content made for a 16:9 screen is shown on a 4:3 screen(old tube tv) it would not appear properly.

From the image above you can get an idea of aspect ratio. As mentioned earlier if 16:9 content is shown on a 4:3 screen wil not be shown properly. Essentially the right and left side will not be shown as it can not fit on a 4:3 screen.

Adhering to a Desired Tone:

This is where an ident  keeps a certain style/tone. This can be a limitation as an ident would be restricted to havigng a certain style, not being able to change very much. On the other hand, this is a good thing as  it keeps consistency, allows to appeal to the target audience and retains the tone of the television channel.

The two examples of above completely different idents. The first one is a CBBC dient, it retains a playful, happy and colourful tone. Where as the BBC News ident retains a serious and important tone.

Duration:

This is very important to keep in mind when producing a television ident. It is better to have a 3 minute long ident than just keeping an ident that lasts 30 seconds. Thais because it gives studios the convience of having more than they need. For example if there were to be a delay in a programme they can play the longer version rather than the shorter one.

The idents above extremely similar, the second one is a more longhand version of the first one. They do this for the reasons i mentioned earlier.
