AS1 Task 1 Designing Idents for television

Understanding the purpose of television idents and the opportunities they present

Idents are animation used to identify  the organisation that is being broadcasted.

The first BBC logo was introduced in the year1960. The logo was used on the map of Britain seperating the broadcasting regions with thier individual logos.

The example above is one the first BBC idents and the most well known. It uses the iconic BBC logo whilst the earth is spinning and a voice announces 'This is BBC television'.

In 1964 BBC 2 was introduced and with it another Ident.

The example above is the first BBC 2 ident.

They are used for many different reasons, firstly,  This ident uses the same BBC logo as the first ident and also had to be produced in black and white because there was no colour, this also had an announcer say what programme is next.

Identifying the channel :

Idents are a very eye catching way of identifying the channel, the ident shows the theme of the image they are trying to project.  For example, channel 4 has multiple idents and they choose which one to show depending upon what is coming next or what they are advertising.

For one weekend only Channel 4 promoted the the launch of the new playstation 4 by using idents. This specific ident shows cars racing and passing by structure that is shaped like the number 4. This can be seen as a play on words as the Playstation 4 is being promoted on Channel 4.

Segmentation of the scheduling:

Idents also play a very a significant role in keeping a channel's schedule organised. This helps channels like the BBC because they do not play advertisements between programmes so, idents would give a break between programmes for studio workers and also keep their schedules organised.

The video clip above is an example of one of the BBC's idents. This specifiic example would hav been used to fill an unexpected gap in broadcasting.

Creating corporate identity:

In this day and age television channels are not restricted to broadcasting to only one country they can be broadcasted to multiple countries. So this allows for brand recognition in various countries. Consistency across multiple channels allow for the organisation to create brand identity around the world, E.g the BBBC

The above ident is used by the BBC world wide and clearly convays their brand identity.

Creating a brand and encouraging brand loyalty:

Creating a brand is crucially important. This encourages the specific audience to stay loyal to that specific channel. An ident helps to endorse the genre/brand of the specific channel by making the audience familiar to the logo and style of the ident used on the channel. As it is a visual reminder it makes it easier for the audience to remember the brand. this makes it more likely for the audience to come back to the channel again.

The Ident above is targeted at people who want see an educational programme. this would allow the audience to come back to it. It also shows the BBC branding.

Branding of particular content (e.g. Sports, News)

Idents for different content would have distinct difference like, colour and style whilst keeping the same brand.

Both the idents above have different styles and approach to reach their target audience. Both are still able to keep the brand using the Sky Sports and News logo.

Packaging and Repackaging of a Series or Program:

Idents are used to promote any events or series that might be coming up on that particular channel. For example when it is christmas BBC one would play an Ident relating to the holiday season.
